Pilates & Menopause

It's so great to see that menopause is being spoken about more openly - it affects all women at some point in their lives and yet, it's almost been a taboo subject until recently.

Menopause can manifest itself in lots of different ways and it is not just the 'hot flashes' that most people associate with menopause. It can affect your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and it's important that you feel supported whilst these changes are happening in your body. It should also be acknowledged that, whilst menopause tends to kick in after the age of 40 (generally), in some instances those in their 30's or even younger can be affected by early menopause.

Symptoms might include:

  • A change in sleep

  • A change in weight (although often this is just a redistribution of where fat is held, as opposed to actually gaining additional weight. Alternatively you might find you lose weight)

  • Brain fog

  • Mood changes

  • Reduced strength

This is by no means an exhaustive list!

How can movement help?

Movement and exercise is a great way to manage menopause symptoms and the earlier you can start adding exercise into your routine, the better. Pilates can provide a range of benefits that will help support your body and mind through what may be a challenging time. Here's an idea of how Pilates can help during menopause:

  • Builds core strength

  • Promotes good posture and supports your joints

  • Increases bone density

  • Improves flexibility and balance

  • The focus on the breath can help manage stress levels

  • Strengthens the pelvic floor

Movement will be one of the best things you can do for yourself and Pilates is a great option! You can get in touch about face to face classes, or visit the Online Studio to start your 7 day free trial in the comfort of your own home!
